I don't think it makes you socially dysfunctional. In complete honesty, we like these characters because they remind us of people we know. We like them because they possess qualities we would like to have. We like them because they are generally a part of us we can so clearly see on the screen and they get us in a way we often can't express. So when one of them dies, we're left with this realization that just as easily, just as senseless it can happen to someone we treasure, to someone we admire, hell even to ourselves. And when you think that it could've been avoided had a group of writers decided to do something about it, it makes you realize that you'd want someone to do the same in real life.

Is it a friend I might know?
It bothers me that her death affects me more than those of people relatively dear to me in real life, though...socially dysfunctional, much?

At least, that's what I gather from it.
