I have a question for you lot on my flist who are writers (gidget_zb , bugsfic , artaxastra  I'm lookin' atchu especially):

Sometimes, when I really like a fic, I will feel inspired to leave a comment saying so. However, I always have a great deal of trouble articulating what exactly it was about the fic that I liked -- for example, I just read a fic by one of the writers on ( Read more... )

Trust me, I know this feeling too. I'm sure I look like the bi-polar commenter, because sometimes there's three paragraphs from me, and sometimes one incoherent line.

I guess most writers feel, although they appreciate the deep, thoughtful comments, it also helps to know a certain number of people are reading at all? (although that stat counter helps too. ;))

"The thing I want to know is, is it worth it leaving those comments?"

From a writer's point of view? YES.

My two favorite kinds of reviews are, "%*%^&* guh" and, "Wow, SO in character!" (As examples.)

I just want to know someone was reading it and that they enjoyed it. A simple, "Great story!" is fine.

Absolutely worth leaving a review. Even if they're just 'This was great' reviews, it lets authors know that it was read and appreciated. And I, for one, love the flaily reviews.

And [small voice] I actually kind of prefer flail over the more elaborate reviews, because sometimes - not often but sometimes, the in-depth reviews can read a bit pretentious to me? IDK.[/small voice]

My favourite type of review is one that quotes back the passages the reader particularly liked. The reader may not know why they liked it, but that's not important because usually 9 times out of 10 the bits they choose to quote back are the bits I struggles with or was unsure of.

But yeah - it doesn't matter how you review, every single one is appreciated by the author - no matter how many reviews they get. ♥

You're adorable worrying about this stuff though, lol.

Wow. This is exactly how I feel about commenting. I want to leave feedback to encourage all of these great writers, but I never feel like I have anything to say. Besides something generic like ‘I really liked your story’, or when I do try to write something a little deeper it ends up sounding like a book report. There is a reason I’m a reader and not a writer. :) Ok, so if I have a point here, it’s to say that I found your post really helpful and it feels good to know I’m not the only one that struggles with this.
