The obvious solution is to register your permanent address at Mika's place (where I assume you're staying anyway), get the SS#, get a job, then get a place and change the registration thingy.
From what I hear, getting into the system in the UK is much harder: You need three things. A bank account, a house and a job. You can't get one without the other two. So getting into the box requires some serious out-of-the-box thinking >_
Eee this all sounds so exciting and fun! Hope you're having the best time and in regard to the social security number, I was going to suggest the same as Haukur. Wouldn't that work? In the meantime, you could try looking for odd jobs such as babysitting or weeding gardens or whatever, just to get a bit of money, if you're desperate? Have fun at the Con! :D
I am all too familiar with the hoops necessary to jump through in order to be accepted into a foreign nation, seems like they're pretty chill about it. Asking Mika's family to let you have your permanent residence at their house (I am registered like that (Mika's family doesn't know yet)) seems to be the bane of all your worries.
Have fun at the con, and take pictures and and and cosplay as a dude.
