Yeah, I heard of Binah. My work seminar visited it this year, but I missed it cuz I was in chu"l. And yep, I agree with you about the Merkaz. I also don't like it very much, but you can also look at in from another angle. It's like "hey! look at all we built! we're awesome!". Cuz every country needs big metropolitan areas too. That's part of what makes the country strong. And believe it or not, 100 years ago Tel Aviv was a little yishuv also.
