Secondary Local Phone

I have been considering getting a local cell phone number just for my students and their parents if they need to call/have a question. I do not anticipate that it will be a highly used phone. Most likely, people will call it and I will call them back from a cell or landline ( Read more... )

With Virgin Mobile you can pay 18 cents/min, which is pricey, but you're only required to buy $20 of airtime every 90 days to keep your number.

Here's an alternate idea: buy a Skype phone number ($18/90 days or $60/year). When you're not logged into Skype, you can have calls forwarded to whatever number you want at the SkypeOut rate (which is currently 2.1 cents a minute for any U.S. phone number). And yes, it comes with voicemail. I used Skype to call Helen when she was in Beijing, and it worked perfectly well. I've never bought a Skype number myself, though.
