Geography's much less of an issue with fake-boyfriends than real ones.

Because fake boyfriends don't have to live within 200 miles of you. And because you don't actually have to want to have them as a boyfriend, just be able to describe them as such.

Well, one possible reason is that you have a somewhat expanded pool. Case in point: The only reason I didn't volunteer is that I do not currently have an interesting job.
