Dark Hour Plot

Sep 25, 2010 16:06

What: Emergence of the Dark Hour on the SS Thor and, consequently, the outbreak of Apathy Syndrome.

When: Everyday between 12:00 AM and 12:01 AM until the problem is fixed (a... month? Couple of weeks? Still up in the air)

Where: Throughout the ship.

How: The Improbability Drive malfunctioned and amplified the general feelings of negativity onboard the ship, drawing Nyx's attention and her presence just a bit closer. Once the Drive is fixed and the honking big Shadow(s) dispersed, the negative feelings will practically vanish from Nyx's awareness, thus keeping her from approaching further and, well, killing everyone onboard.

What's Happening to my Ship?! (In detail)

What is Nyx? Nyx is the Maternal Being, an entity that bestows death upon worlds (or in this case, ships) that cry out for an end to their existences.

But I haven't been feeling any emo urges this week! Due to the malfunction in the Improbability Drive, all self-destructive emotions floating around the ship (and on a subconscious level, all beings desire an end) are amplified many, many times. This amplification results in such a cry equal to one produced by, oh, 15 billion people. This grabs Nyx's attention almost immediately, and, in accordance with the feelings she's receiving, begins to head towards the Thor to bestow death.

Ooookay then... So what's this Dark Hour all about? The Dark Hour is a hidden hour, a time the majority of people are oblivious to as they've been transmogrified into coffins. The few that are aware of it are and are unaffected by it are people who can use a power known as Persona (normally). The Dark Hour emerges as a response to Nyx's approach and, during this time, beings known as Shadows can also gain physical form.

Huh? Shadow? A Shadow is a part of a person's soul, the desires a person feels ashamed of or the ones they deny exist. However, Shadows resent this denial, and, if this resentment become strong enough, they rebel, splitting away from their human originator. And yes, they will still try to kill people who haven't lost their Shadow.

All Shadows are attracted to each other, and also desire to be reunited with "mother", Nyx.

Oh snap, part of my soul is missing! What happens to me now? Well, since your Shadow's run off to find other friends it can relate to and merge with to level up, you'll develop Apathy Syndrome!

Er, what? Apathy Syndrome. Basically, you turn into a shell of your former self. You don't live, you exist. You breath, you walk, but you're more likely to mumble out a stream of garbles then talk to anyone. With Apathy Syndrome, you have no motivation, no desires, no dreams, no wishes, no wants- You're waiting to die. Which, of course, contributes to the call for Nyx, causing her to come closer, which causes more Shadows to split off, causing even more people to fall victim to Apathy Syndrome...

That sounds terrible! How do I get cured? Your Shadow reunites with you. This can either occur forcibly or through ~* accepting *~ your other self. But seeing as people with Apathy Syndrome can't exactly think coherently, their best bet is the first option.

So, how does the first option happen? You defeat the Shadow. As it has zero strength to resist, it disperses and is ultimately pulled back to its originator. Tadaa, your soul is whole and shiny again!

Defeat the Shadow? Does that mean I get a bunch of my friends to go hunt it down with pitchforks and knives? Er, no, not really. Sure, you can stab the Shadow all you want, but that won't disperse it. To do that, you need someone with a Persona to deal the final blow.

You know, assuming those slash/pierce/strike attacks aren't nullified or, god forbid, repelled...

Ergh, so much red tape... But I suppose my soul is worth it... Alright, what's a Persona? A Persona is a Shadow that's under control the control of the person who created it. So, either the person accepts their Shadow for what it is, or they, through sheer willpower, take their dark, selfish, immature feelings and channel them towards something constructive. Of course, a Persona is always stronger if one can honestly look at themselves, realize their faults, accept them, and move to correct them.

Hey, wait a second, didn't you say earlier that only people with Persona could freely wander around the Dark Hour without turning into vegetables? Normally, yes. However, people with Persona can pull other people into the Dark Hour. It follows, then, that Shadows can pull people into the Dark Hour as well. And, well, considering everyone has a Shadow in some shape or form...

Whoops?

Okay, so then why did that never happen in the P3 universe? Hey, hey, put that MegaTen Wikia page away, right now! In the P3 universe, all Shadows had a gathering spot, known as the tower of terror, AKA the summoning spire of Nyx, AKA Tartarus. It was rare for a Shadow to be wandering around outside of it. However, the Thor's Dark Hour doesn't have anything like that, which means the Shadows have nowhere to gather. Thus, there are a lot more wandering around through the streets, meaning the pull on other people's Shadows is stronger, so more people are forcibly brought into the Dark Hour.

Help! I'm stuck in the Dark Hour and I need a Persona user to disperse the Shadows on my tail! What do I do? Run a lot, mentally scream for help, and pray. Very, very, hard. Until we get a tech person clued in on the problem, none of the electronics can work. Which means no network posts or emails begging for aid, ASAP.

Yeah, you know what? This is too complicated for me, I don't want to be part of this Dark Hour. Well, alright then. You can be one of the people was fortunate to not have too many Shadows wander by them during the Dark Hour. You stayed transmogrified as a coffin. Feel free to notice the zombies- I mean, Apathy Syndrome victims stumbling around the ship.

General Timeline

♢ Improbability Drive malfunctions, Nyx starts heading over to put the poor people out of their misery, and the Dark Hour appears. (Log form?)

♦ People get pulled into the Dark Hour. Freak outs, denials, and soul splitting ensues (unless there are volunteers, Shadows will come from NPCs)
♦ Shadow population still low, few confrontations.♢ LOTS OF COORDINATING AND EXPLANATIONS
♦ First zombies Apathy Syndrome victims can be seen wandering the halls. Doctors/healers welcome to examine them to try and figure out what is wrong.
♦ Someone who's tech savvy needs to start working on the electronics problem so people can call for help during the Dark Hour.
♦ Patrols organized to prevent people dying at Shadows hands.
>> Patrols need at least ONE Persona user per group. (Seven groups? Up in the air)♢ As time goes on, Shadow population rises. Patrols can't keep up.

♦ Shadows start merging with one another to form stronger Shadows.
♢ Around the end of the month, the patrols will have taken care of most of the minor Shadows. All that's left are the bosses.
