Hello, Goodbye
That year they quietly decided to ignore that the autumn was near. The evenings may be darker but the wind was still warm, wasn't it? Certainly the mornings were cold but they brought along a scent of wet grass and a promise of a sunny day. What did it matter that summer was about to end when it was still here, that day, for now?
No one made plans for the future. Coats stayed in the closet and heavier shoes in the attic. Work was a forbidden subject because it was not here yet and it did not do to worry about something that hadn't even happened.
The delicious smell of grilled meat filled the patio on the lakeside cottage. The table had been hastily set there: surprise visitors were a regular thing during this time of year, Finland thought, watching Denmark and Sweden bicker to each other while they were attempting to outdo each other in cooking. Technically it would have been the host's, Finland's, responsibility to cook for them but for some reason the others were always quick to volunteer to do it instead.
It was nice to entertain such easy guests though, Finland thought, drawing in a long breath of late August.
