Thoughts on Wuthering Heights

I figured, after listening to an audiobook about Jane Austen that included a quote from Emily Bronte complaining about how boring Austen's characters, plots, and settings were, that I was probably not really going to enjoy Wuthering Heights. And I was mostly right ( Read more... )

I read that book in I think eighth grade, and had a horrible time getting through it. First off, I hate reading dialect. Secondly, even as a preteen girl I thought that only incredibly weak-willed and simpering preteen girls could think Heathcliff was a wholly romantic character. I do remember thinking that neither he nor Catharine was a nice character, and the story was interesting precisely because it showed that even not-nice people could fall in love, but that didn't make me enjoy reading about them. God, Catharine was the most self-centered cocktease and Heathcliff was beyond creepy obsessive stalker. What a not-redemptive love story ( ... )
