I've only just begun, so I'm doing as much as I can in my amateur way on line before branching out. I started with just a few names: my mother and father, my Russian grandparents and one set of great-grandparents, along with only a rough estimate of birth dates. I haven't been able to get very far with the Russians, but I sort of expected that. One Revolution and two World Wars totally messed up the record-keeping. It might take an expert to get any further with them. The same with one Irish ancestor. Apparently, there is tremendous difficulty obtaining data from certain areas due to civil unrest. Not to mention one of the biggest repositories for Irish info burned to the ground. So that might require someone working from that end, too.
But I'll go on looking for as long as I can think of resources to try :)
