Today is one of those grace days, calm and serene. From my computer, I can see squirrels, birds at the bird bath (watching crows trying to hunch their big feathered butts down into a small bowl for a splash is hysterical. Reminds me of my husband in the bathtub,) and chipmunks. A couple of small home-grown bunnies are munching in the yard. The ( Read more... )

I made that same bulgey eyed, frowny beak face at my agent and it worked. You should try it.

That little bird is so adorable. Reminds me of a baby dove that I found stranded on the sidewalk, back in college. People kept walking by and staring...but nobody did anything. This one dude muttered, "Well, that's survival of the fittest." It made me so mad. I captured the dove in a pizza box and drove him/her home. The next day, we dropped off the bird at a wildlife rescue spot in the Everglades. They told me: "That's how they learn to fly."

It's true that young birds usually spend a couple of days on the ground learning to fly, but if someone can walk right up to them and pick them up, they were most likely going to end up as a meal instead very soon. That age has the highest mortality rate. A normal fledling will try to run away, and in that case, a person should let them unless a predator is already nearby.

Doves are sweet and naive and in our experience are rather slow learners, so they're easy prey. In my view, you totally did the right thing. *high five* :)
