“Yuri!”
“Chaerin!”
“What’s up?”
“Do you have a spot for me? I kinda need some cash tonight?”
“I don’t know Yuri. We’re full tonight. You’re supposed to come here tomorrow.”
“Yeah, but I kinda need some tonight. It’s for my brother.”
“I wish I could help you but spots are full already. Just pray for a miracle that someone will back out.”
“Sure. I’ll just be outside.”
“I’ll check the list again and have Dara call you if I can find you a spot.”
“Thanks.”
-----
Sunny slowly parked her car in an empty space. She and her friends spent the night in a local diner, just catching up and spending their last summer night. School will start on Monday and they couldn’t wait for it. She was about to drive her friends home but she needed to take care of something first.
The parking area outside an old building was filled with people running in and out, teenagers mostly with group of friends carrying bags of alcohol and maybe some illegal substances. It wasn’t the safest place to be, Sunny and her friends were in downtown Seoul, a very uncomfortable place for the likes of them, the rich, who never thought of stepping a single foot in a place like this.
“Sunny, remind me why are we here again?” Hyoyeon asked from the back seat.
“I’ll be back in a few minutes guys. Don’t go out okay? It’s not safe around here.” Sunny said, ignoring her friend’s question, before getting out of the car clutching a white envelope.
She rushed her way at the back of the building. It didn’t take her long enough to find who she was looking for. The alleyway was dark but she could see the figure quite well. The small light from the person’s cigarette glowed, showing a small part of the figure’s face as she was puffing it. It was enough for Sunny to know that this was the person she needed to see.
“Yuri.”
The figure looked up at her with a confused look.
“Sunny? What the hell are you doing here?” Yuri exclaimed with a little annoyance in her voice.
“Here.” Sunny said, shoving the envelope on Yuri’s chest. “Oppa asked me to give you this.”
Yuri put out her cigarette and opened the envelope. She gasped when she saw a lot of green bills inside.
“No. I can’t take this.” Yuri shoved the envelope back to Sunny.
“Why not?”
“I don’t need your brother’s money.”
“Then how are you going to pay your brother’s tuition?”
“It’s none of your business Sunny. I can get the money by myself.”
“How? By fighting?” Sunny chuckled. “You’re here to fight aren’t you?”
“Isn’t that obvious? I’m just waiting for CL to hook me up somewhere on the list.”
“You don’t have to fight Yuri. Oppa is willing to lend you some money for -.”
“Please stop Sunny! I don’t want his pity. I can take care of myself and I can take care of my brother.”
“Why are you so stubborn Kwon Yuri? This is not pity. He’s willing to help you.”
“He’s already done enough for me. I -“
Before Yuri could finish, a petite figure came out from the back door.
“Hey Yuri! CL got you a spot. You’re up next.”
Yuri nodded to the girl and picked up her duffel bag. She held Sunny on her shoulder and sighed.
“Listen, thank your oppa for me, but my problem is my problem. I have to go now.” Yuri then smiled to her. “Can you just wish me luck?”
Sunny sighed in defeat. There was no way she could persuade the taller girl in backing out tonight. Yuri was determined to get money and the only way she could get it is through fighting, just like how she had been doing for the past year.
“Yuri, be careful okay? Oppa wants you in one piece when he arrives on Monday.”
Sunny couldn’t see it as she had her back against the tall girl, but she felt Yuri smile before the girl entered the building, leaving her in the dark alley. She put the envelope at the back of her jeans and went back to the parking lot. Her friends must be worried about her now. She should’ve known Yuri was stubborn to accept the money, leading her into arguing with the tanned girl.
Sunny got in her car only to find the front seat empty. She turned around and saw her other two friends asleep.
“Hey!” She woke them up. “Where’s Yoona?”
“Huh?” Seohyun rubbed her eyes. “Oh, unnie you’re back. Can we get out of here already?”
“Where’s Yoona?” Sunny repeated.
“I think she went out looking for you.” Hyoyeon answered, sleep was still obvious from her voice.
“What?” Sunny got out again and ran towards the building.
-----
It was crowded inside. A tall, doe-eyed girl tried pushing her way into the center. She was looking for her friend, she was worried something might have happened to Sunny. Pushing here and there, Yoona found herself in front of a ring, a boxing ring. She had never in her life have seen a boxing ring up close.
She gasped as someone pushed her again, leading her nearer. She could touch the ropes of the ring if she reaches her arms out. She stood there, examining the surrounding. Everyone was busy placing bets. The next match was about to start as a sound of a bell was heard. The crowd cheered, anticipating the next match. Yoona was half curious but was also half scared. She wanted to get out of this place but that means she would go through another endless shoving. She was about to turn around when someone caught her attention at the corner of her eye.
A tanned girl made her way through the ring, only wearing a black sports bra and a white sweat pants. Her ponytail hair was neatly done, exposing her sexy jawline, neck and collarbones. Yoona gulped at the girl’s perfect body. The girl stepped inside the ring, bouncing up and down trying to warm herself up. Another tall girl entered the ring, she was slim and also fit but didn’t have anything more that Yoona find interesting. The last girl who got up in the ring was now walking towards the tanned girl who was patiently waiting in the middle.
Yoona could hear what they’re talking about since she was so near.
“It’s a pleasure fighting with the black pearl.” The tall girl said.
“Jaekyung, right? I heard you’re good.” The tanned girl replied.
“Oh yes I am. Be very afraid black pearl. This might be your last night in Premiera.” Jaekyung smirked.
Yuri chuckled at the threat her opponent made. She backed out slowly as their fight was about to start. There was no way the Black Pearl will lose tonight. There was no way Yuri will leave Premiera without those hard cold cash in her hands. There was no way she’s going to disappoint her younger brother. All she have to do is win this match, even if she knows fighting Jaekyung will be hard.
Another ring of the bell and the crowd grew louder, indicating the match was starting. Yoona braced herself as she set her eyes on one of the girls. Inside, she was hoping the so-called Black Pearl will win, she didn’t know why though. Sure the girl named Jaekyung was pretty but there’s something in the other girl that Yoona couldn’t take her eyes off.
Inside the ring, Yuri admitted to herself that Jaekyung was pretty good. The girl dodged Yuri’s punches and kicks professionally. She only landed a couple of blows on the other girl’s face but that wasn’t enough for Jaekyung to keep pounding on her. Yuri became weak and was slowly running out of air. She panted as she held on to the ropes of the ring. Yuri tilted her head just in time for Jaekyung’s punch which sent the former down. Yuri coughed blood. She shook her head, hoping the pain on her head will go away. The last punch nearly cracked her skull. She felt her air holes starting to close, she needed air so badly.
She looked up with a hazy vision, coughing more blood as she did. She blinked a couple of times and saw a beautiful figure. The girl had her mouth covered with her hands and her eyes wide open. She saw the girl’s shocked reaction as she continued staring at the girl. Yuri blinked again, this time she saw the girl clearly. Her doe-like eyes were beautiful but were starting to be filled with tears. Yuri didn’t like the sight of the girl crying. Call it guts or whatever but Yuri was a hundred percent sure the girl was hurting seeing her all beaten up, and for some unknown reason, Yuri didn’t want to see the pretty girl hurting. She closed her eyes and tried to breathe again. She could feel the invisible gas travel inside her. It was like seeing the girl was enough to open her air holes again, as if the girl was making her breathe again. As if the girl was her oxygen.
Without having second thoughts, Yuri pushed herself up, grabbing the rope for support. Jaekyung turned around and smirked when she saw her opponent was trying to fight again.
“You’re all beaten up, just give up already.”
“Make me.” Yuri returned the smirk as she launched forward and smacked Jaekyung’s face with full force.
It all happened so fast, the tables were turned and Yuri was the one doing the beating. The crowd even grew wilder at the scene before them. With one final move, Yuri raised her right leg and gave Jaekyung a full round house kick, sending the latter on the floor, unconscious.
Yuri kneeled down, exhaustion was taking place as the final bell rang. Tonight’s fight was over. Yuri had just won but her body had just lost. Dara got up to the ring and picked Yuri up, leading her to the locker room. Before Yuri went down from the ring, she tried searching for that girl but her vision betrayed her. She was seeing things in double again.
-----
Yuri limped her way out from Premiera’s back door. Once outside, she inhaled the midnight air. She stopped and leaned on the cold wall. She looked at the brown envelope on her hand, satisfied with what she had done although it cost her a broken rib, a cut on her lips and maybe some bruises. Yuri smiled and put the envelope inside her bag. She was about to walk home when she heard someone behind her.
“You’re hurt.” A husky voice made Yuri turned around.
She gasped at the beautiful face in front of her. It was the girl who stood near the ring earlier.
“You’re hurt.” The girl repeated.
“I’m fine.” Yuri replied coldly.
She didn’t know why a pretty young girl was here in Premiera. From the looks of it, the girl came from a rich family, not somewhere in downtown Seoul. Yuri studied the stranger and soon realized the girl was younger than her.
“You shouldn’t be here. You should go home.” Yuri said.
“You’re beaten pretty badly. You should have yourself checked.”
Yuri couldn’t afford a doctor to check her up. Well maybe she could but she wouldn’t waste the money on someone with a white suit. The bruises and cuts will heal in a week and the pain will go away if she’ll drink something to relieve it. It was always like that. It was like Yuri’s routine for a year. She already knew how attend to herself after fights. If there was a deep cut, she could call her best friend to stitch it up for her at home. She didn’t need a doctor. She would rather have the money spend on her brother’s education, which was Yuri’s number one priority.
“I can take care of myself.”
Yuri turned around to leave. Sure the girl was pretty but Yuri didn’t like how the girl was trying to tell her what to do. She was starting to get annoyed. Yuri started walking away from her.
“Will I see you here tomorrow?”
The question caught Yuri off guard and she had to stop and turn around again. “You are not coming back here tomorrow.” She said sternly.
“What’s your name?” The girl asked, clearly ignoring what Yuri just said.
“No. You will not have my name and you will not come back here tomorrow.”
“I will not if you’ll go see a doctor.”
“Look kid, I don’t have time for this nonsense. I can take care of myself and clearly this is none of your business. So why don’t you just go home to your daddy and mommy and watch Gossip Girl or enjoy a tub of ice cream with your girlfriends?”
Yoona was taken aback with Yuri’s rudeness. She was trying hard to befriend the older girl but she was clearly shut out. She just wanted to help the tanned girl even though she doesn’t know why.
“Yoona!” Sunny came rushing to the younger’s side. She finally found Yoona after an hour of searching.
Yuri’s eyebrow twitched when she saw Sunny beside the young girl. Indeed this girl named Yoona was still in high school, knowing Sunny was too. Both girls should know by now that Premiera wasn’t the best place for rich high school kids to be hanging out.
“Hey Sunny, take your friend home and get out of here.” Yuri called and continued walking away after she saw the petite girl nod.
-----
It was quiet in Sunny’s car. She already drove Seohyun and Hyoyeon home and now their last stop was Yoona’s place.
“Sunny?”
“Hmm?”
“Who was she?”
Sunny knew exactly who Yoona was referring.
“She’s Kwon Yuri.”
