the members are invited to a special party.
the last party
everything was ready in the places they were supposed to be; the food, the chairs, the soju, the guests.
this was supposed to be the night they were to remember for the rest of their lives.
solemn silence kept them in its tight grip but their thoughts defied and echoed far too loudly in their heads. a voice broke the silence, like a sickle piercing through the ice that encased their bodies. it was dongwoon (it was always dongwoon).
“guys, we promised doojoon hyung that we wouldn’t be…. like this.” his voice hitched a little at the end and for the first time that evening, they saw utter defeat in his eyes (sohn dongwoon was never defeated.)
but he was right (dongwoon was always right), they did promise doojoon.
at that moment, doojoon walked out of the kitchen with a huge pot of steaming hot ddeokbugi, their hearts shattering a little at his wide grin and bright eyes but they remembered the occasion and resolved to put genuine smiles on their faces throughout the dinner. it wasn’t too difficult a task because, as everyone knows, there was never a moment of dull moody silence whenever the six of them gathered together.
(they never admitted but six was a magical number for them.)
not before long, empty bottles of soju were scattered around the spacious living room. memories flowed from their minds and hearts, out of their mouths (hey doojoonie, do you remember the time your huge butt in your red panties were seen on national tv!!!!); their drunken hysterical laughter (hyunseung always laughs the hardest when it comes to doojoon) drowning momentarily the misery in their hearts. alcohol loosened their tongues, secrets (I hated your doopose; you looked pathetic whenever you did them.) and confessions (I fucking loved you.) they swore to bring to their graves came spilling out (like ink blots left on white paper, forever haunting and reminding them).
kikwang and dongwoon were locked in a tight embrace on the floor, too drunk to notice or care about their current positions (besides, everyone knew about their growing feelings and affections for each other. everyone but themselves, that is). doojoon’s precious Barcelona blankie wrapped tight around yoseob and hyunseung, who were snoring on the couch they bought not long ago (it will be no surprise to see yoseob sleeping on the floor in the morning though).
the only two awake sat close to each other in the cold on the balcony.
“…don’t raise your voice with hyunseung, he gets defensive really fast and you can’t get a word into his head when he is defensive and upset. don’t spoil dongwoon, he is getting conceited and it wouldn’t do him good in the future…oh wait, I’m sorry. I was the one spoiling him all along haha, guess you have to undo my mistake from now on. don’t be stubborn and give yoseob his corn soup, he can’t survive without it every day. and you have to make sure that kikwang doesn’t get taken advantage, you know how kikwang is-”
“I don’t want to know about such things.”
“junhyung-”
“I don’t want to know, I don’t want to do such things from now on. … I don’t want you to go.”
he didn’t know what to say. in fact, he had a lot of things he wanted to tell the other but none of the words were enough to articulate his feelings and thoughts at that moment. a tear escaped his eye and he wished that he had enough time to spell out every single word he has always wanted to say (three words, eight letters).
but he didn’t have time. time was his enemy and he was vulnerable against it, there was nothing he could do.
a long lasting kiss, shared between them, was the last thing junhyung remembered before he slipped into a deep slumber in doojoon’s arms.
(doojoon hoped that it was enough to express what he wanted to say all night.
please be happy without me.)
the next morning, they woke up all at the same time. (yoseob’s aching back protested and he growled at hyunseung, who could only smile sheepishly back.)
the empty soju bottles laid scattered on the floor.
“…our headlines for today: the country is still in shock today with the death of Yoon Doojoon, leader of idol group Beast, who were involved in a car accident and had passed away on the way to the hospital, the night just before his 24th birthday…”
in junhyung’s hand was the last Polaroid they took together (all six smiling brightly) a week ago, “I love you all” written underneath.
