Run mirzu Run

x-posted from my blog, which by the way can be added to your friends list by adding mirzuRSS (if you are a paid member, that is).

I've been meaning to write about this for a long time, and I realized today that I've been avoiding it because I kept hoping I would snap out of it and decide that I'm not really crazy enough to go through with this.

I'm running a marathon!

It's far, yo! Like, 26.2 miles far. Not only that but the training group I hooked up with seems to be comprised strictly of multi-marathon runners. I am the beginer group. They seem like good people, however, and they'll either whip me right into shape, or I'll die. More news as events warrant.

Beyond the glory of being able to say I've run a marathon, my biggest motivation for doing this is the opportunity to raise money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America.

Huntington's Disease(HD) is a devastating, degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no effective treatment or cure. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Eventually, the person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. Huntington's Disease profoundly affects the lives of entire families: emotionally, socially and economically. Onset is usually in the 30's or 40's, and is 100% fatal. The children of affected parents have a 50% chance of carrying the gene, and everyone who charries the gene develops the disease. Yeah, it's a downer.

I'm raising money for this terrible disease becuase if has profoundly affected someone who is very close to me. Please don't ask me who, as they have asked me to keep that information private. You can find more info here, or you can just ask me, as I've been reading up on it for a while. Also, I'll specific fundraising info, soon, including a link to a site where you can donate directly.

My goal is to raise $2,620 ($100 per mile that I'll be running) by the Marathon in October. I'll be printing my own shirt for the race, and the top donor will have the honor of choosing what will be written across my back. The next top 5 donors will get their names, or whatever else they want printed on the front. I'm sure you can all think of something you'd like to write on me. ;) I will also be holding a fundraising party some time soon; keep your eyes and ears (and wallets) open.

Wish me luck!
