Back when Africans were brought over as slaves, nobody called them "African-Americans" - of course, that was because people didn't think they were real Americans. All the names people used for them referred to their skin color. But in the 1960s, with the civil rights movement, a lot of black people thought that these terms (like "negro") that had been used to refer to slaves were kind of insulting, so they wanted something that showed their pride. "African-American" was it.
Of course, I just say "black," because just being black does not make you an African (or vice-versa).
Okay, y'all, I need to go eat now. Misa's post made me hungry.
Yeah, I do like Sailor Moon. Hence why I have Badass Sailor Mercury as my picture.
You mean, does the live-action Sailor Moon come on TV? Unfortunately not. I've seen it because I downloaded it off the Internet. I've still got it if you ever want to watch it. (I was watching it with Sara, but we haven't done that in a while. And we left off at the biggest part! I don't know how she sleeps at night.)
Yeah, what he said! Today in America, it's politically correct to call someone African-American or Asian-American or Hispanic-American or whatever. I think it's gotten kinda out of control! Because there are black people here who don't have ancestors from Africa! Like my friend is from Bermuda, so when people call her African-American, she has to explain to them that she's not African, so she prefers the word 'black' to 'African-American'. I feel that if you are born here, then you are an American. If you were born somewhere else and then moved here, then yeah, I guess you would be an African-American or Asian-American, etc. Yeah, I think if everyone is running around calling people names that are too long like Pacific Islander American, white people should definitely be called European Americans ^^ Of course, many people use the term caucasian, which means white person. Since the word caucasian never had any bad connotations behind it like the word negro did, it was never changed. Hope that clears it up! America is a strange place!
