Writer's Block: Beyond Our Ken

I was around 16 and sleeping in my bedroom which was right across from my Mom's and down the hall from my older brother's. I woke suddenly when I heard someone enter my room and cross over to my bed to stand over me. I felt (and still am sure that I was) wide awake but I couldn't move. Sounds like you experienced sleep paralysis.

From Wikipedia: "...it is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep... Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the body paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully conscious, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger.[3] Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual due to the vividness of such hallucinations. ...The paralysis can last from several seconds to several minutes after which the individual may experience panic symptoms..."

Oh, I prefer this theory to the many that have gone through my head. But it's still terrifying, no matter how sane the explanation.
