Resurrection
He was dead, and it felt like there was nothing left in this world for Clark. It felt like every hope was extinguished, and every light dimmed. He had died fighting an alien threat in Gotham, fighting to protect his city, his world, and his family.
It wasn’t enough. Even with the League out at full force, somehow, he managed to get into the worst spot, and die.
It wasn’t fair. He was the most careful, paranoid man Clark had ever known. It was supposed to be him lying there, dead. Not Bruce. Not Batman, not the love of his undoubtedly soon to be very long life. No.
He distantly felt something running on his skin, darkening the edges of his vision until the only thing he could see was Bruce’s body.
‘Do you want to save him?’
He nodded in assent.
‘Would you do anything to bring him back?’
Tears cascaded down his cheeks as he nodded yet again.
‘Would you give anything for his safe return?’
“Yes!” he shouted hoarsely to the cold, dark sky, wanting nothing but to break down.
“Then the bargain is struck.”
The sky tore itself apart with thunder and lightning, and roared in fury. The lightning struck the ground near Bruce and Clark until it finally connected the two of them in the energy of the lightning, making them glow with the crackling electricity.
A voice rumbled in Clark’s ears as Bruce’s heart began to beat, and his chest began to move, and his injuries healed.
“In exchange for the return of Our only Son, the price paid is the sharing of pain. You shall know all of the pain our Son has weathered through, and you shall know the wretched darkness that has clawed at his soul.”
Seconds later, Clark collapsed.
