I got up at 4:00 AM today to catch a bus to be at work by 6:00. I and my coworkers spent the day trying to protect the bottom line while not ruining Christmas. We'll do this until December 24. It always starts out being an attempt at tradition, and always is preyed upon by those who would make money from it into a commercial event. That's the source of the greed you observe.

There's also a lot of guilt to be had if you don't or can't provide the material lifestyle society and the consumerism tells your kids and dependents you're supposed to provide.

Those are the people who are getting it wrong. Though I'm familiar with the family not putting much emphasis on these things, I'm sure there are people who are more concerned with sharing a good meal with their families and reflecting on what is good in their lives. But it'd be better if they did this everyday.
