a tutorial in response to this post on coloring-help.

mine:

theirs (cutterdolls):

1. start with your base; you don't need to duplicate it or anything.

2. adjustment layer >> curves >> aim for something like this. it will usually be different depending on the lighting of the icon!
i duplicated my curves layer and set it to around ~30% but this is just optional. we're just trying to add more depth to the icon here, so the darker colors stand out a bit more.

3. adjustment layer >> hue/saturation >> crank it up all the way to between 50% - 60%. i turned the saturation up to +55 here.

4. adjustment later >> selective coloring:

reds:
-20
+20
+15
-35

yellows:
-40
+20
-25
+20

cyans:
+100
-25
+100
0

blues:
+80
0
-10
0

magentas:
+100
+80
-100
-15

whites:
0
+60
-20
-30

neutrals:
-20
0
0
-10

if you want to give the icon a more yellow look rather than a pale red-yellow, use these settings for yellow instead:
- 40
+25
+30

5. adjustment layer >> brightness/contrast:
brightness: +20
contrast: -20

6. merge your layers >> filter >> smart sharpen:
amount: 20
radius: 0.5

and you're done. i hope i've helped a little bit!
