some people, as they communicate online come to identify with one another. they may even develop a sense of intimacy and share revealing information. some online friends become so significant that people even build their lives around them

while over all i tend to agree, i think this is also a very late 90's way of looking at things..
in this day and age (at least in some professional and personal aspects) the internet is so second nature that the blending of the two is far more common.. i.e. friendster and the like.. you meet people online, meet them in real life, and it is no different.. maybe it is just me, i have met some many people i knew online first it just seems like no big deal... too bad i don't get free trips to meet them anymore... fudge.
