[Her SFC clicks on, crackling with static for a moment before the muted roar of a shower running overwhelms it. Bathroom; the door shut but unlocked. Water; pouring out for far longer than is necessary

Fear is the feeling you get when you're staring down the barrel of a gun in the middle of some god foresaken village in a third world country, with all your troops dead on the ground beside you.
[voice] ... LOOK SHE ASKED this is not my fault.cantataofgraceOctober 4 2010, 22:46:39 UTC
[ Why oh why did you ask, Murasa. Why? ]
Fear is generally the irrational "fight or flight" response by the human mind to what it considers to be a threat. Generally speaking, it's the latter of the two, although fear CAN cause people to attempt to fight, sometimes. It's a primal emotion likely left over from centuries of evolution, and in the case of other creatures, there isn't much difference. After all, it's an instinctual reaction to something that would cause you harm or has caused you harm in some sense before, physical or emotionally.
So most likely if you're afraid of something, that's your mind trying to protect itself. Therefore, no matter how illogical the fear developed might be, it will still scare you until you either overcome it or expose yourself enough to it to feel you are no longer threatened on a basic level. But mostly, fear is what prevents people from doing something that would be very detrimental to their health... like a fear of heights would prevent you from jumping off a cliff.

[Murasa sounds very calm and put-together when she replies, and there's no way to tell that the corners of her eyes are burning dangerously. Carl's words are full of a comfortless logic; she knows all of that already, but the knowledge means nothing if you can't use it to unlock your own head and force a thousand nightmares to tumble out.]
Is there a word for a fear that gets worse with exposure and is detrimental to your health just by existing? I never did get much education.
[voice] SORRY xDDDcantataofgraceOctober 5 2010, 06:23:18 UTC
That would be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's a severe anxiety disorder that commonly develops after exposure to psychological trauma, usually overwhelming the person's ability to cope. The symptoms are general flashbacks and nightmares associated with the incident, both asleep or awake. Usually when the person is awake, anything that marginally reminds them of it can cause the effects of extreme fear.
