Where Are We Going, And Why Are We In This Handbasket?

WHITE OUT

February is Black History Month in the US.  You might assume that, as a black man, I’d be happy about this, perhaps even proud of the special focus, just for us.  But I’m not.  It’s frustrating to me that after centuries of slavery, segregation, discrimination and second-class citizenship, despite having a man of color in the white house ( Read more... )

This is a really good, really powerful entry. I've got a bunch of tabs open in my browser now, and am eager to read the links I hadn't come across before. I admit, about halfway through I was hoping you'd bring up Medieval POC - it's SUCH a great blog. And I wasn't disappointed! The curator of that collection was at WisCon last year and contributed to quite a few panels - she's funny and well-informed in person, too. :)

I was really hoping someone would take this angle on the prompt. This is rich in passion, research, and external information. You did the topic and the search for truth proud.

When I saw the topic white out it is the first thing that came to mind to write on.

Which does not surprise me! It was the first thing that came to mind for me after blizzard, but it needed a good non-fiction touch and I was not the expert to do it justice!

I'm so glad you did.

You have written an outstanding essay. I have met a number of people who believe we are in a post-racist world, as shown by the election of President Obama. I appreciate all the interesting links.

Apparently, certain keywords may spark the attention of LJ itself, and this post was actually promoted on the main page for a day or so. As a result, we have actually received some hatemail through this entry, from people who are also more or less claiming the same thing (about this being a post-racist world), but clearly proving otherwise in their statements. Electing a President of color didn't even end the struggle here, much less in the rest of the world.
