If you get sick, you go see a doctor. Many of them now will negotiate prices with uninsured patients. As for a payment plan. Let them bill you. (My mom told us that as long as we pay -something- each month then they can't turn that bill over to collections ... even if you paid five bucks a month for a huge bill). Sending you an email about something work related.
See if your town has a freecycle group you can sign up for. Check craigslist regularly for writing gigs. Join a local writing group to make contacts. Find a catastrophic insurance plan if nothing else so that if something major happens you'll have coverage. Search online for local job fairs and workshops (many libraries and universities have them) and get something temporary even if the ideal isn't available until next fall. Good luck to you; that's a tough situation.
We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Also, don't be afraid to tell your bishop about your situation. Not that you feel the need for church welfare at this point or anything like that, but it's good for him to be aware so he can be on the lookout for jobs or help for you. If you're crafty at all you could try picking up extra money selling stuff on eBay or etsy.com. I have friends who do that, and there are definitely cheap ways to do it.
Oh, but California is brutal to live in. My hubby and I hit a financial situation like this one, and it was because we were living in bloody Orange County where our rent for a studio apartment was $1105/month.
Trust me, I know how this feels. My husband and I, while living in CA, would have less than $100 in the bank and still have bills to pay. Somehow things always worked out, and I've seen miracles happen. But that doesn't undermine the stress you're feeling now. Hopefully you will see those miracles with the help of some extra prayers from my family and me. Good luck. And don't be afraid to put your own names on the temple prayer roll--it's there for ANYONE who is afflicted and needing extra help!
