The thing to remember about cats is that they WANT to be clean. They want to go in the right place. However, their idea of the right place and yours might be different. If there's one place he uses more than any other, put his tray there - even if it's inconvenient to you at the moment. Once he knows what it's for and is using it regularly, move it bit by bit to where you do want it.
I think we've got the little rascal situated for it now. He's sooooo friggin' big now. At least comparatively. I think he's gonna be a huge barn cat, but we'll see.
