ppl are weird about language. when i was working in sudbury, i used to practice my french at work with a girl i went to school with, and you would not believe how many ppl told me i was being rude by not speaking in a language that they could understand. i can see how it might bother them to a point, but a) i wasn't speaking to/about them; b) i was speaking FRENCH!!! one of our national languagaes! holy crap! then again... they never seemed to mind when one of their customers needed a francophone to speak to...
i love eharing other ppl speak their language! i might not understand it, but that's not their fault :p

Now, that's a different thing from the "short fuse" aspect of T. If something really makes me mad, I feel my anger flash, and then fade away rather quickly. I obviously don't act on the flash of anger. The assertiveness - that's a whole other thing. It comes more out of a place of self-respect and self-care than out of a place of anger.
I think it's great that you confronted your co-worker's insensitivity head-on. He will respect you more for it, hopefully.

The other day, a coworker at Directions said that I should do something because I was "a guy" and I reminded her that "I wasn't really a guy" (she is someone who knows about my gender identity). And she still went with it, so I told her straight out: "I'm trans. Don't refer to me as a guy."
It felt empowering.
