I'm near Mall of Emirates... until I read your post, I wasn't sure whether anybody but my husband and me felt it (I know, it went for like 20 seconds, but somehow I thought nobody else would notice!) and I sure didn't realize people were evacuating. We just sat here going, "Whoa..."
That's because the ground below Newcastle was HOLLOW!
It's pretty cool that the expats brushed it off and the locals were freaking out ;-) although I never really thought of the Middle East being on its own plate (the Arabian Plate)

We had soo many earthquakes that all the expats got used to them and looked upon them as 'fun' the Japanese would run around like ants though.

The news reports are all worried now about how things are being built.. especially with things being like 1km high!
