This is such a complex situation these kids and families and filmmakers have been put in, all because of a movie.

I don't even know what the right choice is.

I don't think there's right choice anymore. It's the nature of the beast. The producers could have chosen child actors instead of slum kids, they went with authentic portrayals. I read somewhere that these kids got between 500-750 pounds for a year's work, comparatively it's not much for a professional but that's a lot of money for them. Though really how long will that money last? And after becoming 'stars' all over the world and going to Oscars, can they be expected to go back and live under a tarp? Then there are the parents who exploit their kids, selling them to whomever is interested.

This whole situation's a big mess but it's happened before where productions take 'real' children to act in films, not compensating them properly, and just leaving them after they're done. Take a check at Luis Buñuel's Los Olvidados if you're interested.
