Why is D afraid to talk to me and convinced you went Dark Side?

What made her think his coffee wasn't used in biological warfare? There was a reason why he always let others make coffee. He was living alone in the City, so nobody around to make drinkable coffee.

He didn't answer right away. He watched the scotch in his glass, like it was the most fascinating thing in the whole apartment. He had a biting remark ready, but that would lead to an argument. He did imply he will behave for that short moment.

"Car accident," he just said.

That seemed too quiet a death for one Bart Bass. A car accident? Just a car accident? The revelation was a let down, but she would never admit it. How could she even think it?

The correct reply would be 'I'm sorry' but Blair knew that right was not what Chuck needed. She reached for his hand, holding it tight in reassurance. She managed a weak smile for him, before looking down at their hands in thought. This was new to her, this dying business. "Lily must be devastated."

That? Was the worst thing she could've said.

He narrowed his eyes and shook her hand off his. "I wouldn't could on it," he said in a disgusted tone. He stood up abruptly and turned away from her. He didn't want to talk about it.
But at the back of his head he hoped she'd understand why he was furious with Lily.

"He died because he was driving to the Snowflake Ball, to fight for her," he started. "And she dared to bring her Brooklyn loverboy to the funeral... And he behaved like he had a right to be there... So forgive me if I don't care about her feelings."

That happened too fast for her mind to digest. What? What? Lily Bass has a Brooklyn loverboy?

"I-I'm sorry," she blurted out, looking down and away from him. Confusion was written all over her face. It crossed her mind that this sort of thing must run in the family, then she stopped her thoughts and tried to focus back on him. It must have hurt. She knew he was only just learning to trust his stepmother, and now this. Sure, cheating was as common as brunches in Manhattan, but that made it no less hurtful when it happens to you.

And now Bart Bass is dead. "He knew you loved him," she said instead. "I'm sure."

He let out a bitter laugh. "Well that doesn't matter now, does it," he turned back to face her. He took a sip of the scotch and shrugged. "I'm in the City now, for the best really. At least I don't have to live under the same roof as Lily and risk seeing Rufus Humphrey..." God knew Humphrey Junior was enough of Brooklyn flavor. They certainly didn't need more of that.

It hurt, watching him like this. It hurt more than she thought it would.

"Humphrey?" She spat out the name like a curse. Once she thought Jenny was the bad seed in the family, but turns out the apple really doesn't fall far from the tree. That family is going down, she thought, and it will definitely be by her hands. It was one thing to steal Serena from her, another thing to attempt to dethrone her, and another thing entirely to hurt someone she-- to hurt her friends. But that was a matter she would deal with later, alone.

"Chuck, it doesn't mean you have to live alone." She knew how awful it was when Serena left. "You should-- Serena's your sister, right?"

"Don't be riddiculous Blair. I don't need a babysitter. I"m doing fine. And for all her Holier Than Thou act, Serena wouldn't willingly room with me," he pointed out. And he wasn't sure he wanted a roommate anyway. The scotch was dulling the ticking, not to mention the pain. He didn't need someone around, judging him for everything he did. "Besides, she's living with, what's her name, Claire?"

"She's moving back in with me." Blair quickly said. She hated people touching her things, why must everyone keep insisting on it? But she reminded herself that right now it's not about her.

"Look--" She phrased and rephrased the sentence in her mind. "I want to help you get through this, even if I don't really know how. I-- you're a friend, Chuck, I know you, I've known you forever. I may not know how I can help but I know you and you'll get through this a stronger person." Okay, B, that was a bit too passionate. She took a breath to calm herself, giving him a fond smile. "Let me?"

Well of course Serena would be moving back with Blair. Nothing seemed to separate those two for long. Chuck briefly wondered if that affected the deal he now clearly remember making with Blair. But it wasn't exactly the best moment to ask.

"And what do you suggest I should do. Or rather, let you do..." he asked looking into his almost empty glass. He really should refill it, especially if this conversation continued like this...

Blair searched his eyes, wondering if he meant to mock her by his question or if he was genuinely asking her. It was hard to tell, but 'no argument' was the rule of the day, and she was always a rule-abiding citizen, friend, person. The point was she wanted to think well of him today. She wanted to really believe that he was a good person at heart (because if Chuck Bass was a good person beneath it all then maybe Blair Waldorf was too).

"Don't run from it," she started. "It's harsh, but, what's done is done, and now you just need to pick up the pieces and move on. I'll be around to talk, or just keep you company, until you're really okay again."

"I am okay," he insisted. "It seems I already managed to run from it. Can't get further than the City, can you?" he pointed out quietly.

That actually helped him make up his mind. He walked up to the cupboard that stocked all his alcohol and refilled his glass. He felt too sober for this type of conversation.

He sat down on the couch again, still not looking at Blair.
