Oh my god, this is exactly how I feel about S.M. Stirling. I enjoy his books, I like that he includes homosexual relationships and that the main character of one of his series is a black lesbian who ends up getting married to a woman and adopting children.
But! While he has quite a few prominent lesbian relationships in the series (which I'm glad he does), there is not one functional male/male gay relationship. In any of his books. Not one. There is one gay male character, who has a crush on the male lead (who is straight). That's it.
And it bugs me! Because on one hand, yes, it's good that he's at least accepting of some homosexuality, enough to include prominent characters who are not straight. But at the same time, it's so very skewed in one direction. Only women can be gay and have it work. Apparently.
Yes, exactly! It just-- argh! Incoherency! It just upsets me so much, in ways I have a really hard time putting into words. >_< It's like, homophobia and sexual objectification, all rolled into one! Double trouble! :Db
And like, I'm sure that that writer doesn't consider himself homophobic. He probably just is made uncomfortable by the idea of writing two guys together, but is cool with two women together, and... doesn't stop to think how hypocritical that is.
*shakes fist at Mass Effect 2* I thought they had a gay character in there! One of the minor NPC engineers or someone?
But it's true, they don't want to lose any of the 18-35 male crowd, especially if two guys holding hands is so squickable. Yet gallons of blood and gore spread all over the screen causes nary a blink. :(
If there is a gay male character, I haven't run across him yet. Of the two NPC engineers that work for Shepard, the male one seems quite heterosexual (and Scottish and adorable, but that's beside the point
