Summary: He didn’t like to see her sad. EngBel.
A/N: For pale-jonquil
He always thought she was a bubbly country, one of the most strongest and cheerful he had ever met. Since they were little, she would always prove she could wear a smile in any situation, no matter how threatening or difficult it appeared to be. She never complained, or questioned anybody, and was always rewarded with beneficial things.
However, he was always taken aback when he saw her cry.
One time when they were young, she perched herself on the grassy earth as she sniffled away her sorrows near a river. He didn’t know what had happened to make her so upset, but he did know that he wanted to cheer her up. She was always there when he was feeling a little blue and managed to straighten him up with pep talks and sweet smiles. He figured it was his turn to do so.
But he wasn’t the best with words the way she was. If he would try to talk to her with positive words, he might just mess up and confuse her. No, he had to do something. Actions were more of his thing. So he looked around and tried to spot something she would like.
His hare…it was cute, but he began to wonder what she would do to it. An apple…she wasn’t hungry; she was sad. A fish…no, it was the same thing as the apple!
He was surrounded by tall grass and weeds and he couldn’t see anything that would be fitting enough to take her.
Flowers? Where would he find those? He knew they were perfect, but they were not around at the moment, and he didn’t even know what kind of flowers she liked.
He walked around for a little bit, scanning for flowers until he finally found some. He thought they lacked attraction at first, but once he saw them correctly, the scarlet color made them perfect. What were these, poppies?
He didn’t know, and quite frankly, didn’t care, as long as they made her stop crying.
With the flowers in his hand, he walked over to where she was sitting and knelt next to her, offering her the poppies. She sniffled once again, but when she saw them, she blinked away tears before she directed her attention to him.
She took the flowers in her hands and silently thanked him, trying not to maker her voice shake.
They didn’t have to say anything after that. He was just glad he was able to make her smile again.
A/N 2: And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how the
red poppy became Belgium’s national flower. *shot* Don’t take my word for it on that one. I’m just throwing head canons around, although it is true that the poppies are the national flower. I hope you all enjoyed!
