Eeep.

There needs to be a campaign to educate the public in general about bicycle-related safety. I can easily imagine the kid's parents thinking, "As long as we teach him to stay on the sidewalk, he doesn't need a helmet." I've certainly interacted with my share of drivers who thought *I*, an adult commuter, belonged on the sidewalk.

Argh, how terrifying. I'm glad nobody was actually hurt.

And argh, poor bicycle safety for kids. I had a conversation just this weekend with another mom who didn't want her kids riding on the street and I tried to emphasize that the sidewalk can be MORE dangerous.

I had something not-too-far-removed myself recently when doing a left turn into a driveway and a pedestrian who was too busy talking on her cellphone abruptly stepped off the curb. So I feel your adrenaline and it's good to avoid these things.
