I try to be aware of and appreciative of the ridiculous level of privilege I have. But sometimes I just get hung up on the smallest things. Last night I wanted some water. There I was in bed, and not 20' away, I had a tap in the wall with clean, fresh, delicious water always available to me. I'm on the third floor--which keeps me safe from flooding ( Read more... )

Yes. Yes indeed.

I am occasionally aware that an accident of birth means I can have running water, indoor plumbing, and the ability to walk outside the house showing my face to the world.

the other half of that which is also really really awesome is that there's a mechanism to make all the waste water *GO AWAY* (along with all sorts of unpleasant things we put in that waste water.

I'd take running water over central heat any day.

The amount of water privilege I have is staggering. I tend to think about this a lot on weekends because I'm the laundry monster for the household and two growing boys generate a LOT of laundry. Being certain that my water won't give my kids diseases or parasites and having a big electric-powered machine to do all that hard work for me feels like huge privilege.

I have in my brain somewhere the maybe-fact that it was you (many years ago) who got me to think about my water privilege as a way of easing me into understanding the vast array of privileges I have. Water-privilege is easier for me to hold onto because it doesn't involve anything about my self-image, which pretty much all my privileges do.

I always try to remind myself how good it is to have these things.

The times that I've spent a week or so away from civilization (on the trail, in the jungle, and more recently on the playa) are great for reestablishing my perspective. When I return to civilization, the first thing I want is a hot shower.

For whatever reason for me it's clean running water, a fridge, and a cooking source (stove) that works reliably.
