I try to be aware of and appreciative of the ridiculous level of privilege I have. But sometimes I just get hung up on the smallest things. Last night I wanted some water. There I was in bed, and not 20' away, I had a tap in the wall with clean, fresh, delicious water always available to me. I'm on the third floor--which keeps me safe from flooding

I am occasionally aware that an accident of birth means I can have running water, indoor plumbing, and the ability to walk outside the house showing my face to the world.

I have in my brain somewhere the maybe-fact that it was you (many years ago) who got me to think about my water privilege as a way of easing me into understanding the vast array of privileges I have. Water-privilege is easier for me to hold onto because it doesn't involve anything about my self-image, which pretty much all my privileges do.

The times that I've spent a week or so away from civilization (on the trail, in the jungle, and more recently on the playa) are great for reestablishing my perspective. When I return to civilization, the first thing I want is a hot shower.
