... and furthermore, I wonder if deliberately funding such organizations *creates* the good vibes which drive down crime, etc, or if the organizations are, for lack of a better term, a symptom of a healthy/recovering area.

I wonder what heavily funding something like Theater at First or Somerville Open Studios is more or less cost effective than hiring more cops or other more conventional means.

This concept was also mentioned unrelatedly by my manager, while we go through a hiring process. Basically, people involve with community organizations are more customer-service oriented in general. But that translates to more involved in the advancement of other's situations.

Fascinating! That makes sense. I was just thinking generally when you are involved with your community, you notice and pay attention and stay engaged. I'm working with Somerville Open Studios, but since I'm busy doing arts organization stuff, I'm more interested in, say, the High School Orchestra than I might otherwise be, because we face similar issues in terms of getting audiences to arts events.

But what you're saying makes sense, too.

Also, in general, people who can work with volunteers basically can't be serious prima donnas. Or, at least, people with a long track-record of staying involved in volunteer groups have some ability to work with... quirky ...personalities.

Interesting overlap there.
