Well, I am not sure I will be out in the world today, so I will relate a couple nice-to-folks I've committed in the recent past.
A couple days ago, I was in a Honey Dew Donuts getting a treat. I noticed a touring cap sitting atop the rubbish bin. I spied a coffee clatch of gentlemen whose average age was about 75. I approached them and asked "Does this hat belong to one of you gentlemen?" Their response, as if I were one of the gang, was "Oh, that belongs to George." Several heartbeats later, George did, in fact, turn around and identify himself. Made me smile that was was doing a good deed, but also imagining myself 30 years from now having a good gab with a crowd of cronies.
Also, since Thanksgiving, I've upped my usual tipping from around 20% to around 30%. It's not much, but every little bit counts.
Oh I love those coffee clatches of old guys. There's one that I see a lot near my place and it makes me so happy now that we tend to recognize each other and say 'Hi,' when I come into the shop. Glad george got his hat back.
hmm.. I remember when I made the decision to go from 15%+ (round up) to 20%+ (round up). Might be be time to consider whether that's still the right amount.
I don't know if I'll be out in public much today, but yesterday I was biking to work, and as I turned onto the local main road, I noticed a bus driver honking at a driver who had just pulled out from a nearby gas station with a full gatorade bottle on the roof of her car. I wasn't too far behind her, so I sprinted up the hill and waved to get her attention, and when she stopped and rolled down her window, I was able to pull up, grab the bottle and hand it to her.
Awesome! The sprint up the hill makes that especially awesome! It's such a turn from the script that it's too easy to expect, of cyclists and drivers harassing each other.
I sometimes bike up beside people with their coat hanging out their car door, too.
I went out today to check out an invitation printer (Tom offered me at Thanksgiving a gift certificate he had won to a bridal group, and it's totally going to cover gorgeous invitation printing for me!). In chatting with the printer, he mentioned that his father had a calligraphy shop next door -- the oldest dedicated calligraphy studio in America, in fact. I wandered by to admire his work, and ended up spending at least half an hour chatting with him, listening to his stories about his antique inkwell collection and his time in the service and so on. It was genuinely interesting for me, of course, but I get the sense that not that many people take the time to listen to him.
