That assumes much.

I have discussed with my pokemon that should I be struck down or otherwise incapacitated permanantly, they are to return to the wild. They have approved this idea.

I hate to say, but you're correct on how humans trust Pokemon.

But, I also have to admit, not all of them break the bond easily.
