They will give you individual instructions according to which design you pick. It's confusing at first lol, but premade lj's make it pretty easy.
To friend lock or make the entry so only you can see it, when you are about to post at the very bottom it will say "Show this entry to:" and will have a drop down menu. From there you can choose whether to make it public, private, friends, only, etc.
