Title: They Laugh As The World Burns
Mythology: Lusitanian
Characters: Trebaruna, Runesocesious, Reve.
Pairing:  Trebaruna/Runesocesious, Trebaruna/Reve
Word Count: 491

Summary: He comes to her, always, and worships at her feet like a mortal.

Runesocesious always gave her some of the most lovely presents. Not like Cariocecus, that gave her scarred, bleeding men with their guts ripped out.

No, the souls that Runesocesious gave her were much better. Brave soldiers lost in battle in a blaze of glory were almost as lovely as women who died in childbirth.

Reve gives her no presents at all. Then again, he can give her nothing that interests her. He never can.

~

Her husband cares for her, has since the beginning of all things.

But she doesn’t.

Reve is the coursing rivers, the uncharted forests, full of darkness and moss and hidden predators. He can give her nothing.

~

The Other One comes to her at night, sometimes, shrouded in shadows, completely silent.

He gives her brave soldiers.

She kisses him and he grip her hips like javelins as kneels in front of her, where she lies on the ground.

~

The mortals are curious creatures, she thinks. They love Them, worship Them, swear to fulfill their vows if They gives them what they desire.

They even love her. Her, that takes away sons, daughters as she pleases.

Ataegina gives, and they love her more. No matter, she can keep her goats.

~

Reve knows. Of course he knows. He’s no fool.

He says nothing. He never has.

He’s not cruel enough to deprive her of her pleasures.

~

She remembers when the seeds of her existence bloomed there, brought from the North, where the skies are grey and the mortals have fair hair.

In her own land, they have swarthy skin, and dark hair and deck themselves in gold. They love her and she find that she loves them too, every single one of them that comes into her realm.

~

He comes to her, always, and worships at her feet like a mortal.

She loves him, too, as he whispers against her skin, vows and prayers taken by the night.

~

Men come, like they always do, but these are different.

Her beloved mortals fight, men and women alike, and she has never been so proud. But three remind her that mortals are weak creatures and betray their leader.

She welcomes him like the great man he is, the lone warrior that inspired fear in the heart of an empire.

~

They still live, but amongst them are new deities, foreign deities, and she remembers the one with two suns for eyes, from so long ago, long forgotten.

He still comes to her.

Some things don’t change.

~

But they do, regardless.

The mortals talk and say that there is one god.

They don’t remember their vows, not anymore. Not Endovelicus, curing their illnesses, not Ataegina, bringing them spring.

And they certainly don’t remember her, welcoming them where all mortals are bound to go.

They call them demons.

They away fade like a summer day and she thinks she can feel his lips on her skin.

~

Ataegina - Goddess of spring and rebirth. She has the goat as a sacred animal.

Endovelicus - God of health.

Reve - Is thought to have been a god linked to mountains and rivers. The Romans identified him as Jupiter.

Runesocesious - One of the many Lusitanian deities of war, he was associated with spears and described as mysterious.

Trebaruna - Goddess of the home and of death. Linked to the god Reve.
