I love this! That moment where the blinders of lust and love and affection come off and you realize that the other person is not perfect like you'd fooled yourself into believing. And I felt so bad for Bert beating himself up the whole time. But, that made the shift so much better--like when the other person seems more flawed, you can see yourself as better than you had.
And the summary line definitely made sense.
