“What’s a brother?” Al had asked.

Ed smugly grinned. “A brother is a boy who is older than you and is your brother.”

“That’s an older brother, Edward,” his mother said softly.

“That doesn’t answer the question, dummy!” Al responded, overriding his mother’s statement.

“A brother is a boy and is re… related?” He turned to his mother, “Is that a word, mama?”

“Very good, Edward. It is. You are very smart.”

“And the boy came from mama, too!”

“That’s right.”

Ed nodded, grinning at the compliment.

“But what’s a brother for?” Al asked, his tone aided by his little balled-up fists, which he shook to stress his impatience.

“Well, Alphonse,” his mother started, “a brother is for-“

“For being awesome and stuff! To make sure their little brothers don’t get hurt ‘n stuff!” he said, crossing his arms over his chest with a little arrogance. He clearly believed he was awesome.

“What stuff?”

Ed rolled his eyes. “Lots of stuff!”

“No stuff!” Al argued back.

“Remember that time you fell, and I gave you a piggyback so you wouldn’t get dirt in it or nothin’?”

“Yeah…”

“Stuff!” Ed replied, stomping for emphasis.

“Edward,” his mother half-heartedly scolded, a smile on her face. “You have to be more specific.”

“Pacific?”

“Specific, dear. You were on the right track, but you have to stop using the word ‘stuff’ when you explain things.”

“Ooh,” Ed said, nodding. “What would you say brothers are, mama?”

“Take a look at each other,” she said. When they did, she smiled as she continued with, “There. That’s what brothers are.”

“That’s even worser than saying ‘stuff’, mama! You’re not fair!”

Fandom: Dragon Ball Z
Title: Interlude
Pairing/Characters: Vegeta/Bulma
Rating: PG

Summary: "When she had met him, she didn’t know how she should react to the things that would come out of his mouth." For surmise!
Word Count: 273

When she had met him, she didn’t know how she should react to the things that would come out of his mouth. His demeanor was threatening, to say the least, but it was so dangerously alluring. She couldn’t help herself. She watched him a little closer, listened and hung on every word he said.

“Are you listening, woman?”

Or, you know, maybe not. His muscles were damn distracting. Once she had seen them all, she couldn’t go back to looking at him in a normal way.

“Maybe,” she pouted.

“What kind of answer is that?”

“A non-committal one. Why are you standing here talking anyway? No training?”

“Make me dinner.”

“At least make a question.”

“Dinner? Now.”

“I swear…” she sighed, turning to walk away. He suddenly grabbed her wrist, holding her still. She rolled her eyes with a soft grumble. “I can’t make you dinner if you’re holding onto me like that.”

“Something’s off with you.”

“Perceptive,” she said sarcastically, but when he didn’t respond to that-only staring. She continued, “What do you think is off?”

“I’m… not sure. I’m sensing more energy from you. It’s been steadily growing.”

She obviously knew what he was talking about. “Does that ring any bells?”

“Bells? Should there be bells ringing?”

“You’re hopeless,” she said, shaking her head with a smile. She leaned back to kiss him on the cheek before breaking free from his weak hold on her.

When she began to walk away, it was almost as if a light bulb flashed in his brain.

“Wait… you’ve gotten fatter. Wait!”

When she gave no response, he followed her into the kitchen.

“Woman!”

Fandom: Soul Eater
Title: Progress
Pairing/Characters: Stein, Marie
Rating: G
Disclaimer/claimer: I do not own Soul Eater in any way, shape, or form.
Summary: "Unbeknownst to her, it was progress." For cornerofmadness! Sorry it's so short.
Word Count: 133

She sat on the couch, sipping tea from an odd-looking, yet ornate, teacup. Placing it on its saucer, she looked over at the other person in the room. Eying Stein, eyes devoid of coherent thought, she couldn’t help but sigh softly. She watched him rock back and forth, gently swaying; she would let him do so, as it was less self-destructive than his other activities. She knew why she was there, even if it wasn’t necessarily a happy job to do. When she stood to bring her teacup into the kitchen, she approached the meister. With her free hand, she brought it down onto his head in a reassuring, kind gesture, before walking past him into the other room. His only recognition was a small switch, but unbeknownst to her, it was progress.

Fandom: Fairy Tail
Title: Normalcy
Pairing/Characters: Natsu, Lucy
Rating: PG
Disclaimer/claimer: I do not own Fairy Tail in any way, shape, or form.
Summary: "So, when she didn’t see Natsu for a while, she couldn’t be jealous. She had been lonely, though, even if she wouldn’t admit that out loud." For phantombones!
Warning: Spoilers for recent chapters!
Word Count: 716

Lucy stepped out of her bathroom, dressed in her pajamas and ready for bed. It had been a long day, almost impossibly long. Taking jobs by herself put her in awkward positions, wearing odd outfits, and putting on too much of a sweet act for her health. She missed normalcy. However, no matter how much she missed that normalcy, she needed rent money even more.

Weeks had passed since Lisanna had returned. Lucy had barely seen her partner-well, her main partner, anyway. It was odd but she didn’t necessarily mind. If any of her important friends had been “dead” for years and suddenly came back, she would spend every waking moment with that person-she would probably suffocate that person with her unwavering attention and adoration.

So, when she didn’t see Natsu for a while, she couldn’t be jealous. She had been lonely, though, even if she wouldn’t admit that out loud.

Lucy frowned. She missed Natsu’s antics. She missed the feeling of being wanted, her little ragtag team of friends randomly showing up at her-

“Hey, Luce,” said a cheery voice.

She screamed; she couldn’t help it. “What the-“

“It’s just me,” Natsu said defensively, holding up his hands.

“What are you doing here at,” she glanced over at the clock on her nightstand, “midnight?”

Her scandalized look did nothing to deter him. “I can’t come visit?” he pouted.

Lucy moved to sit at her desk. “Don’t you have better things to do? I don’t know, like sleeping?”

“Maybe, but I kinda missed seeing your goofy face,” Natsu said, shrugging.

She looked away, her face heating up at his words. “I think you have that backwards.”

“What do you mean?”

“Nothing, nothing.”

There was a lengthy pause of silence.

“So, what did you want?” she asked.

Natsu plopped down on her bed, kicking off his sandals.

“Nothing.”

Lucy was officially confused. Out of everywhere he could possibly be… why here in her apartment? This man addled her brain.

“Got any food?”

“Not really, but, if you want to find-“

“Can I stay here tonight?” he asked as if he didn’t even ask his previous question.

She furrowed her eyebrows. She could have focused on the whirlwind of questions, but she chose to look for an underlying meaning. “Did something happen?”

He shook his head. She sat down next to him. Something about his demeanor reminded her of a child that wanted to stay in his parents’ bed because of a nightmare. She couldn’t shake that feeling, even if he denied anything being wrong.

“Did you have fun with Lisanna these past few weeks?”

“Yeah.”

It was like pulling teeth to get information out of him.

She almost didn’t want to ask: “What did you do?”

He thought for a few seconds then replied, “Walked, went to places we used to as kids, talked about a whole lot of stuff, ate…”

She frowned. “Sounds… romantic.”

“How do you figure?”

She didn’t want to say it, but… “That sounds like a date, Natsu.”

“Huh. I’ve never really been on one before, so I wouldn’t know.”

“You’re kidding.”

“Nope. Why would I be?”

“Nothing.” He still watched her expectantly. “Nevermind. I shouldn’t have asked.”

“Well,” he said, lying back on her bed, “I came back here. Let’s go to sleep.”

Lucy grumbled a bit about how improper this whole situation was, but at least Happy wasn’t around to tease her. For two people who were definitely not a couple, he sure came back to her like he was hers.

She flipped off the light, glad he wasn’t bugging her about food still; she walked over to her bed and sat down next to him. There was a dull glow of light from the streetlamps outside, bringing a soft light to the room; it was enough to outline his face, which she caught herself staring at. Natsu pulled off his vest but left on his scarf, even more of a comfort. He smiled at her in a way she couldn’t quite describe, but it pulled her towards him. She wrapped her arms around him in an impromptu hug that she knew he wasn’t going to return. When she pulled away, he was looking at her more intensely. She lifted the covers and he followed her under.
