“No, I refuse to go when you’re like this,” Chiaki stated, frowning deeply at his wife. He may not love planes, avoid them at all costs, and opt to take the train, but he wasn’t kidding; he wouldn’t let his wife be without him when she was nine months pregnant.
Nodame frowned back, rubbing her swollen stomach out of habit. It was huge. “But-“
“No, nothing. Childhood fears be damned-and it’s not like I’m upset about not getting on the flight, but I’m not putting you in that position.”
“Oh, Shinichi, what position would you like to put me in?”
“You’re nine months pregnant!” he shouted. As an afterthought, he asked in disbelief, “How can you still be this horny?”
“Please. Go. Nodame knows this concert is a big deal to you.”
“It is, but something else, our baby, takes precedence over this concert. I’m going to have to cancel,” Chiaki responded, pulling out his cell phone. “When we booked the show I didn’t know that you would be this pregnant, much less pregnant at all. The concert isn’t until next month, but for me to be gone rehearsing… that’s unacceptable.”
“I know,” she said, back to pouting.
“I’m not blaming you for anything, but you have to accept that I’m not going to leave you.”
“I accept it, all right, but Nodame doesn’t like being the one that holds you… holds you back.” She sniffled, her pout growing into a trembling lip.
“Really?” he deadpanned. “This is what you’re upset about now?”
“Nodame is hungry, too,” she replied shakily through her tears. He embraced her, tucking her head underneath his chin in a reassuring gesture.
Chiaki smiled, rolling his eyes. Typical Nodame behavior, but-
“Hey, uh, Nodame?” he asked, tentatively stepping back from her. Something wasn’t right.
“Yes, Shinichi?”
“Why is the ground wet? The carpet is… squishy?” he asked, already knowing the answer, but really wanting to hear it from her.
Her calm composure crumbled. “The baby was pressing down on Nodame’s bladder, I didn’t even know it was coming-“
“That’s not it, stupid,” he said tenderly, his nerves now turning tense. He wasn’t even going to begin thinking about how he was going to deal with cleaning that mess up later. “Your water broke, didn’t it?”
“I… Nodame’s stomach has been hurting every so often, but these kinds of things usually go away after a while. I’m just waiting it out.”
“Waiting out… contractions? Are they stronger now or back then?”
“Oh, now. Definitely now.”
“How are you showing no signs of pain when these happen?”
She shrugged noncommittally, as if it were no big deal that these crippling cramps happened often. That they meant something. “Nodame doesn’t want Shinichi to think she’s weak. So-“
“Are you kidding me? Let’s go. I’ll get your coat, that suitcase I made up last week for you.”
“Is that why Nodame can’t find her brush?”
Chiaki almost threw a tantrum then and there. This woman. She was going to be the death of him one of these days. “Nodame! Come on!”
