Thanks everyone! I shouldn't make a fuss really but he was a good dude, and it will be weird to go and visit my parents this evening without him meeting me at the door. Bah.

I have a similar relationship with my parents cats. I think they matter, especially if one cannot have cats of one's own. It's OK to feel sad and to talk about that.
