It's a funny mental image, no? I figured that since he's the Avatar's bison, and that Fire Lord Zuko will have asked for them to do whatever Aang needs, they're going to make sure that Appa is happy. Being humble, I'm sure Aang feeds Appa himself and doesn't really care for the extra attention, but dat bison would eat it up. You know it.
