We don't have DirecTV right now because when we were cutting out extra expenses, that was one of things to go. But my husband used to install DirecTV systems and we had them for quite a long time. They have amazing customer service (DirecTV, not necessarily the people who install it, just to clarify), and I always found the quality better than cable. Overall, I think it's a much better value, not to mention less frustrating, as cable companies are notorious for having shitty service.
I use DirecTV and we switched over from Comcast a little over a year ago. I've had no problems, no satellite outages (even in the heaviest snowstorms or hottest days), no nothing. I have no complaints. They are infinitely better than cable (which used to go out several times a month) and I've heard their customer service rocks. But I haven't needed it because I've had no problems. Plus, if you have an HD tv, everything is HD automatically. Not some channels, or for an extra fee, or anything. It just IS.

Our current Cox bill is about $280 a month (including cable, phone & internet) so we are understandably trying to get it cheaper.
