Rule #5 in the Sei Rudolph Gakurin Resident's Guide states that "no student is permitted to have candles, incense, or any other fire hazard, including, but not limited to, miniature stoves, toasters and toaster ovens, or lighters in their dormitory". Yuuta has reminded Mizuki-san of Rule #5 several times, especially upon seeing and smelling the dozens of scented candles the other boy keeps in his room, but Mizuki dismisses his warnings with a wave of his hand and a chuckle coupled with a smirk.
"It's not as if they ever check our rooms, anyway," he says. "Besides, don't you just love the smell of this one?"
Mizuki hands him an unlit candle and goes to find a lighter. The candle is pale purple and smells of lavender, and Yuuta thinks that his manager is out of his mind - he prefers the vanilla candles. "Actually, Mizuki-san…"
Mizuki laughs, and soon he's at Yuuta's side once again, carrying an already-lit vanilla candle in one hand and a cinnamon candle in the other. "I know, I know. You hate the lavender ones."
Yuuta gives him a half-smile and sets the lavender candle down on one of Mizuki's many bookshelves. His eyes wander lazily around the room, over Mizuki's extensive candle collection, over his even more extensive collection of books, over the neat desk and the hastily-made bed on which Mizuki is now sitting, legs crossed, head perched upon one arm as he considers Yuuta in turn.
It's silent for a moment as Yuuta's eyes are drawn back to the two lit candles, and he inhales a sweet, subtle scent that reminds him of holidays at home and raspberry pie. He's heard that certain scents can act as memory-joggers, but it still takes a few heartbeats to remember that it's June, not December, and that he's with Mizuki, not his family.
Yuuta sighs and looks to Mizuki, who is looking at him as if he is taking mental notes on him, and Yuuta can't suppress a shudder. Mizuki-san could be kind of creepy, at times, especially when he didn't blink like that.
"Hmm," Mizuki finally says, and his eyes dart toward his iBook. "Would you like to watch a movie with me, Yuuta-kun?"
"Huh?"
Yuuta mentally kicks himself. The day he stops sounding like a moron in front of Mizuki-san will be a day worthy of celebration of the highest order.
Mizuki smiles. "A movie. I've got a fair few on my hard-drive - illegal downloads, you know - and there doesn't seem to be anything else to do, ne?"
Yuuta has homework to do and an English test to study for and it's a beautiful, sunny day outside - perfect for a tennis game or two. "No, not really," he shrugs. "What movies do you have?"
"Good ones," Mizuki says as he gets up. He grabs the computer and browses through a few files while Yuuta looks over his shoulder. The movies all have foreign names (mostly English, but Yuuta swears he sees some French and German titles, too), and Yuuta hasn't heard of any of them. He's beginning to think that perhaps it wasn't a good idea, after all, to agree to watch a movie. Being stuck inside for two hours watching a flm he wasn't likely to understand was not Yuuta's idea of a good time.
But then again, Mizuki would be with him so maybe it wouldn't be a total drag.
"Ah, how about this one? I like this one," Mizuki finally says and Yuuta shrugs, not even bothering to read the title because it isn't likely that he'll be able to translate it, anyway. Mizuki starts the movie and turns up the volume on his laptop, and the proceeds to strategically place the computer so that it faces the bed just so.
Yuuta looks to Mizuki questioningly but Mizuki just nods to the bed, and Yuuta sighs. Brilliant. They'll be sitting on his bed. While this is indeed the most comfortable arrangement, Yuuta still thinks that it will be… weird. But maybe it won't be, and he's being paranoid.
It's then that Mizuki turns off the lights. And then he locks the door. And closes the shades.
Yuuta swallows nervously. The only light in the room is now coming from the two lit candles and the computer screen.
Some of it is reflecting in Mizuki's eyes.
Yes. This was a bad idea.
This fact becomes evident when Mizuki sits down on the bed and pats it - an invitation for Yuuta to sit down… very close to him.
Yuuta does not need this confusion, and he tells himself this repeatedly as he sits next to Mizuki. Calm down, Yuuta thinks. He isn't going to bite.
Mizuki's knee is touching the side of Yuuta's thigh, though, and Yuuta doesn't really look at the computer screen as the movie begins, and doesn't notice until five minutes into the film that it has Japanese subtitles.
After this minor discovery, he tries to relax a little, but Mizuki seems set on making him as uncomfortable as possible and has moved closer to him, and now their arms are touching. Yuuta becomes instantly aware that Mizuki is wearing a short sleeve shirt, and his eyes wonder for a moment to Mizuki's arm, which is small yet solid - deceptive in its apparent delicacy.
"So how do you like it so far?" Mizuki asks him, a smile on his face and in his eyes, which are still reflecting what scant light there is in the room.
Yuuta blinks, then looks back to the screen. The first thing that comes to mind, he says. "It's in black and white."
Mizuki laughs and touches Yuuta's arm. "Aa, but it's a classic. I think you'd like it if you actually paid attention, Yuuta-kun."
He doesn't remove his hand from Yuuta's arm. "Oh," Yuuta says.
He tries to concentrate. He really does. But Mizuki is stroking his arm, teasing at the hairs there and making Yuuta shiver. He doesn't pull away because that would be rude, wouldn't it? Besides, it's not entirely unpleasant - Yuuta would just rather not think about how pleasant or unpleasant he finds the attention Mizuki pays him because thinking about it would mean acknowledging it and he just doesn't want to.
Acknowledging it would possibly mean that he liked boys. And he doesn't. He shouldn't. He just likes Mizuki's touches a little, that's all. That's fine, right?
Some lady in the movie is sobbing and some guy is comforting her. Yuuta has no idea what happened, but Mizuki sighs, his head on Yuuta's shoulder.
Something is wrong with that last thought and it has nothing to do with the fact that Yuuta has been "watching" this movie for half an hour, now, and is still clueless about what's going on or even who the characters are.
No. Somehow Mizuki's head is on his shoulder. When did that happen? Mizuki is leaning against his side, too - such a gentle, warm pressure that Yuuta hadn't even noticed it until this very moment.
Yuuta swallows, then speaks. "What happened to her? I sort of… missed it."
Mizuki doesn't move from his comfortable position against Yuuta. Instead, he tilts his head so that they're face-to-face and explains, "She just found out that her fiancé died in the war."
Mizuki's voice is quiet and sad, and his eyes are shining, both with light and something else that Yuuta doesn't want to acknowledge because that would mean that Mizuki was close to tears. Their faces and mouths are mere inches apart, at least until Mizuki finally looks back to the screen. "I love this movie," he admits, and it's harder for Yuuta to pretend, seeing him like this, feeling him practically snuggled up against Yuuta's side, the scent of vanilla and cinnamon in the air from the two candles burning on Mizuki's shelf.
He slowly wraps an arm around Mizuki's waist and feels Mizuki shuffle in closer for a perfect fit. Yuuta can nearly sense his senpai's smugness.
"How tragic," Yuuta finally says, frowning as the woman on the screen fawns over photos of the man who could only be her dead fiancé.
To his surprise, Mizuki chuckles. "Not really, seeing as the man we saw earlier eventually steals her heart all over again."
"Mm. How fitting."
Later, as the credits roll, there is just Fuji Yuuta and Mizuki Hajime and the candlelight. That is enough for Yuuta, at least for now.
