6. extremely loud and incredibly close - jonathan safran foer

I don't know what to think about this. He's not a genius, but it often feels close. I feel that it's often easier to write from the perspective of a child or an old person, because one can be simpler, more direct, in a fashion that would sound cheesy from adults. It made me cry.

i much preferred everything is illuminated to this, and i feel his 'whimsy' or whatever it is is slightly kitsch and, maybe forced? in this book. but i too loved it, and him, and i believe he really had a knack for saying exactly the right things in the right way more often than not.

(plus it makes me dizzy because my copy of this is signed to me! wheee!)

Wooooo... did you meet him? I think I preferred Everything is illuminated too, although I find that time makes these comparisons so difficult! Have you read The History of Love by Nicole Krauss? It's his wife, funnily enough, and they write in a similar way; but to my mind she's more whimsical. But still has that knack sometimes too.
