I can't help but laugh when I see pieces in fashion magazines that say "Price Upon Request." The caption might as well say "If you have to ask, you can't afford it, which is why you're looking at it from the pages of this magazine sitting in your living room in sweats and a face mask while eating Chinese take-out instead of being at the boutique ( Read more... )

That's a pet peeve of mine too.

I would just for once in my life love to look in a magazine, see an outfit that they not only make in a normal size (you know bigger than a 00) but I can also afford. How many women in the world that buy their magazines do they really think can afford half the clothes they feature?

In the magazine industry's defense, a lot of them are integrating more affordable pieces (and actual AFFORDABLE pieces, like from Target or Kohls, as opposed to "This $300 blouse is affordable in comparison to the $1500 blouse.")

But if youre a savvy enough shopper and you're smart about your look, you can take the look from the magazines and get it for a steal from anywhere. I always see the mags as a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. Besides, what fun would fashion be if you couldn't play with it?

What's sad is that I think my most "high end" outfit comes from the Gap. Actually, I've been meaning to tell you at the moment they have cashmere blend sweaters for $25. I bought myself the navy and grey striped one.
Anyway, there was one magazine (I think Glamour) that used to crack me up cause they'd have a "Splurge vs. Steal" page where the splurges would be something like a $5000 designer dress, $500 shoes, and a $1500 necklace. The steal would be a $1500 dress, $300 shoes and an $800 necklace.
I have noticed though that some magazines have been advertising & stores carrying "affordable" designer clothes like Vera Wang for Kohl's, Isaac Mizrahi for Target, and Max Azria for Walmart.
I don't think it matters if you spent $5000 or $5 on whatever it is you're wearing as long as you can (in the words of Tim Gun) "make it work."
