Bill Nighy is an amazingly versatile actor. I've seen him play wildly different kinds of characters, all of them convincingly.

Maybe she was just making an homage, not so much plagiarizing.

but she's not writing fantasy...I'd find it phony for her to pay homage (which i had considered) to Tolkien and other Fantasy books and then say "oh, I didnt know I was writing Fantasy, I don't think it's Fantasy"
Cuz if she IS paying homage, than she's lying about not writing Fantasy

and, if she had just named Batty "bagshot" and left it at that, I would think it was paying homage, def. but there's too much other blatant things that make that seem less plausible.

let me give you a for instance:

George RR Martin named one of his character Drogo, i feel that this is an homage to LOTR as Frodo's father's name is Drogo. Homages should be subtle things like that...

oh my gosh, I can not agree more.

and the movie, was crap. It was long drawn out and missing important information. Most the films could stand on there own, this one could not. I had to explain things to my brother afterwards so he understood what was going on.
really this movie was just a one last run for cash to hell with it being good or understandable.
