question about textures on Gimp

ive been hitting a little snag every time i try to do this so i was hoping one of you gods of graphic design fellow LJrs might help me out :).

ive been downloading some more textures on Gimp, but ive encountered a few (mostly on deviantArt) that are downloaded as .rar and i cannot open them. the ones i have no problem downloading come as .jpg and

theyre teh same thing? really? *bangs head* lol well i can unzip files just fine, but these dont really come 'zipped'. anyway i'll try what you said.

is PeaZip available for macs?? looked around and apparently its not, but just wanted to make sure :/
in any case, are there like PeaZip alternatives for macs or something? >.<
