My only memory of setting off fireworks in the street with my cousins involves a couple of burns and some scorched clothing. They may be pretty, but they're definitely dangerous. Your fears are quite justified. Small fireworks have been banned in Australia for about 15 or so years now, for that very reason. Nowdays we only see the big community displays set up and authorised by the local councils.

The fireworks didn't go in the direction we thought they would... My cousin was burned on her cheek, me on my hand. Pretty minor stuff, but it sticks in your mind. My cousin was lucky it didn't hit her eye. I'm quite happy to watch from a distance now.

yipes! i've never been burned, or been there when someone else was burned, but i do have friends that have been burned or had someone in their family burned. the scarest one was one of my friend's nephews - who was only 3 or 4 at the time - who was hit very close to the eye by a firecracker that exploded. my friend was hit in the leg and burned by one of the shards as well. they went to the hospital and everything checked out, they both are fine now, it was a couple of years ago. never the less, it was most distressing to find out about.
