Told a professor that my coworker (that just got back in the office after working remotely with CANCER) is finally getting to interview people this week for help, he replied to my email with his whole chest verbatim "To be honest, I’d prefer to see more resources allocated toward supporting students and research. A$$hat ought to get a message concerning his funding request: DENIED
One of my non-LiveJournal friends (Dr. America) works at a community college as does a former colleague/ that shared an office at the university here, and both of them have stories involving staffing shortages. I'm surprised Dr. America hasn't created an open-source virus to infect a$$hats like the one you're dealing with (it's easier than building a giant mech to destroy the offenders' offices...)

He named a slew of people that don't work at our location, implying that we were overstaffed so I replied with this and don't intend to reply to anything else he sends on the matter of his shitty response or his wondering why my boss isn't answering him.
"Only Elaine works at SEBS/NJAES. From what I know of those other names, they all work at ORSP and while it's nice that they have extra staff to so whatever it is they do on that end, Elaine has no assistance nor any backup during times when she is unavailable.
I also have no help either so hopefully nothing happens to me because then the extra students and research won't be any good with no staff to do the preaward work. "

But yes, what you're suggesting is exactly what I plan to do from now on with him and some of these other self-important dickheads

I hate to generalize, but here I go doing it anyway. I think professors in general are very self-centered. They have this independence that people in industry don't have, and they forget, I think, that there is a bigger machine, more cooperation required, than just what affects them directly. A very myopic view of the university as a whole, I guess is what I mean.

From my experience wrangling nearly 100 of them, you're not wrong. The selfless, humble professor is a very rare breed. And these are all faculty mostly doing research which bloats their ego even more since they are under the impression that everything they touch is saving the world.

LOL preach. I would never ever call my husband (a professor) selfless or humble. (Far from it.) But I do think he sees the bigger picture, because he gets very frustrated by how other professors conduct themselves/deal with issues/approach teaching & research in general. But I see these issues in his department for sure.

Word on the street is that Bosslady is supposed to announce her departure to the Provost's office tomorrow but will be with us through December. As far as potential replacements, I'm hoping that they can talk the current chair of Food Science into being our director. He really does see the bigger picture and he actually halted the funding on one of his faculty until the faculty member got his project renewal paperwork to me.
Also, his podcast is entertaining
